Journeys Beyond the Neatline
Two-Sided Cartography Exhibit Catalogue
University of Alberta Libraries
Journeys Beyond the Neatline expands the boundaries of what mapping can be. In this exhibition catalogue, the two authors explore their own very personal experiences and illustrate these for the reader through text and imagery. The book is a contrast of ideas, meanings, and styles, with one author focusing heavily on printmaking and the other on a series of watercolours and prose.
This project presented a unique challenge in that it was to represent two very different stories. A square format was chosen in order to accommodate a wide-range of imagery and the book was set up to read from either side – a flip book – to allow each person to stand alone while remaining part of the same piece. The book measures 10” x 10”, which provides for large image sizes and generous white space, leaving the catalogue with plenty of room for contemplation.
