Thunderbirds Ravens
Exhibit Catalogue, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
Urban Thunderbirds/Ravens in a Material World is a collective show of four First Nations artists. Cultural change, Coast Salish mythology, urban consumerism, and personal narratives were some of the themes explored in their work and expanded upon in the catalogue.
The challenge of this project was to find a common visual representation for the diversity of pieces in the show. As the work was created at different speeds, with the complete collection only coming together for the opening, we had to draw upon elements that appeared repeatedly across the progressing artwork: the colours (red, black, blue, and white) and the shapes (e.g. curves and circles). A simple cover of two glossy circles, almost touching, symbolizes the two sets of artists of the Coast Salish and Kwakwaka’wakw Nations.
