Recalling the Buffalo
Exhibit Catalogue
Bruce Peel Special Collections Library, University of Alberta
Recalling the Buffalo documents Mr. Martin S. Garretson’s life-long passion for the American bison and his conservation work in the United States to protect the animals and to promote their recovery after practical extinction. The catalogue was launched hand-in-hand with an exhibition of photographs and artifacts and shared similarities of design with this exhibition.
As Mr. Garretson was a lover of the Old West, there were efforts made for this catalogue to appear somewhat old-fashioned and rustic; the numerous historic photographs reproduced in sepia tones and the additional textures add to the essence of time and place.
One of the most challenging aspects of this project was to capture the changes in bison population by creating a simple information graphic illustrating huge differences over 400 years.
